The flight recorder block provides the benefit of being able to locate the place your ship was destroyed at. However, the block only records information if the ship was destroyed before the block itself was. For that reason, it is suggested to be put in the center of the ship's mass. It's worth to note that size doesn't matter for this block.
One special mission you can find at a military outpost requires the destruction of this block in a distant Sector. You are told to scrap a ship, but to complete the mission, you just need to destroy the flight recorder.
