Blocks are elements of which most of the objects in Avorion are created of. They directly influence the behaviour of the objects they make up, depending on the type of the block and the material the block is made of. Players can attach new blocks and remove old blocks from their ships to reconstruct them.
When an object is created out of blocks, a hierarchy is created. Except for the root block (the very first block of the object), every new block needs another block that it can be attached to, thus forming a connected graph structure.
Types[edit | edit source]
There are multiple types of blocks. Current block types are
- Assembly Block
- Cargo Bay
- Computer Core
- Crew Quarters
- Edge Turret Base Block
- Energy Container
- Flight Recorder
- Gyro Array Block
- Hyperspace Core
- Inertia Dampener
- Integrity Field Generator
- Rich Stone
- Shield Generator
- Solar Panel
- Torpedo Launcher Block
- Torpedo Storage Block
- Turret Base Block
- Turret Rotation Lock
Properties of blocks[edit | edit source]
These blocks have different properties like durability, mass or thrust that they give to a ship that has them built in. Some of those properties depend on the size of the blocks, so usually bigger blocks have a higher amount of durability.
Durability[edit | edit source]
All blocks have a certain durability, that depends directly on the volume of the blocks and their material. Some blocks, like hull blocks, have a higher durability than other blocks.
Mass[edit | edit source]
Each block has mass. The higher the volume of the block, the higher the mass. The capability of a ship to accelerate depends on the thrust supplied by engine blocks and its mass. The higher the mass, the slower the ship will accelerate.
Mass is also considered when flying into other objects in space, so an objects with high mass can hit other objects pretty hard.
Price[edit | edit source]
The price of blocks is dependent on not only the block volume and the block type, but also the block material.
Block Statistics[edit | edit source]
Values given for a 1x1x1 size cube, updated and verified as of Avorion Beta 0.20.4 Relative values are given as compared to the values for a generic hull piece.
Generic hull piece costs 100/9 = ~11.11 Credits and 5 Materials. Credit cost goes up by 35% for each material tier. Mass Varies by material significantly. Durability starts at 4 and increases by 50% per material tier.
|Type||Mass||Durability||Credit Cost (Fraction)||Material Cost||Ship.xml Index|
|Basic Hull||! Varies||! 4 + 50%/tier||! 11.1+35%/tier||! 5||1 (Edges:100-103)|
|Solar||0.1667||1||3 ~ (Varies, 5.798 I / 4.633 Ti / 3.748 N / 3.128 Tr / 2.649 X / 2.303 O / 2.041 A)||0.1531||60|
|Armor||1.6667||3.75||0.3333||1.6667||8 (Edges: 104-107)|

|Hyperspace Core||1.3333||0.125||82 ~ (Varies, 98.779 N / 86.466 Tr / 76.902 X / 64.759 A)||50||55|
|Computer Core||1.3333||0.125||30 ~ (Varies, 41.525 Tr / 32.017 X / 19.835 A)||5||54|
|Transporter||1||0.1667||63 ~ (Varies, 67.443 X / 59.564 A)||0.125|
- Precise fractions representing the relative costs are not currently available for Generator, Shield Generator, Integrity Field Generator, Hyperspace Core, Computer Core, and Solar Panel, so approximations are shown instead
- Hologram blocks always appear to cost 1 material regardless of size
Other Properties[edit | edit source]
Destruction of blocks[edit | edit source]
When a block of an object is destroyed, all blocks attached to it may fall off, creating wreckage.
The probability for this happening depends on the number of child blocks that would be contained in the newly created wreckage. The higher the number of blocks, the higher is the probability that there will be wreckage left. So, when a complex object breaks at a block, it is very likely to create wreckage.
Otherwise, there is no wreckage and the lost blocks will simply explode.
Size of blocks[edit | edit source]
The default created ship is 2x2x2 and reports 8 k m³ volume, which implies that a Build mode dimension length of 1.0 equals 10 meters, which is the cube root of 1000 m³.
